About SafetyWing

SafetyWing is an insurance company created by digital nomads, for digital nomads and regular travelers. They observed the essential needs that nomads like us have and saw the opportunity to create a customized travel insurance with great coverage at a reasonable cost.

The main issue that nomads have to deal with is the lack of support that a regular corporate full-time employee has. Today, if you want to be location independent and work as a blogger, freelancer or a musician, for example, you don’t have easy access to health and life insurance, a retirement plan, sick leave, etc.

Knowing that, three friends: Sondre Rasch, Sarah Beyahte Sandnes and Hans Kjellby, had the idea to create what they call a global social safety nest.

The name SafetyWing represents the freedom they want people to have, by living, working and traveling wherever they want.

At the moment, SafetyWing offers three different types of insurance:

Besides their current available products, they are working on global retirement and pension plans, disability insurance, parental leave, extended health and life insurance, income stabilization for freelancers, and more.

Why is SafetyWing cheaper than other travel insurance?

To keep prices competitive enough, they have a US$250 deductible fee for most medical expenses (paid only once) and exclude the electronic devices insurance in their policy.

Why is SafetyWing considered the best travel insurance for digital nomads?

Even though digital nomads and long term travelers need flexibility to purchase and renew their travel insurance from anywhere at any time, most insurance companies only allow you to purchase it before you leave home and don’t let you extend it while traveling. The Nomad Insurance by SafetyWing allows all of that, with only a few exceptions due to local regulations and requirements**.

These location independent travelers and workers also face high costs when purchasing travel insurance for long periods, and SafetyWing can beat their competitor’s price.

** The exceptions due to local regulations and requirements are: Australia, Canada and the U.S. states of Maryland, New York and Washington. This means that you can’t purchase or renew your Nomad Insurance while physically there, no matter if you are a resident or a traveler in one of these places. The solution would be purchasing it from a nearby country or city.

SafetyWing Travel Insurance Reviews

You are probably asking yourself “Is SafetyWing insurance good?“. A great way to have an idea of how good or bad an insurance is, is by looking at their customer reviews on reliable websites.

Being realistic, every single insurance company is going to have complaints, so what I do is compare a couple of them. This way I can see which one has a better overall review.

As you can see below, SafetyWing has good travel insurance reviews at Trustpilot.com.

Pros & Cons of SafetyWing Nomad Insurance policy

ProsCons
Competitive price: When compared to other travel insurances, especially in long term travels, SafetyWing is usually cheaper. Deductible: You need to pay $250 for most medical expenses (only once per policy period).
Flexibility: You can buy it at any time (before or after you started traveling) and extend it while you are traveling for up to 364 days**. Age limitations: They only cover people between 15 days and 69 years old, which doesn’t make them very inclusive to senior people.
Multiple countries: The same policy is valid for multiple countries. Gear and electronics: Electronics and gear aren’t covered in case they get stolen.
Countries coverage: The Nomad Insurance covers any country, with the exception of:
– Any country or area that is sanctioned by the U.S. such as Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Russia, Belarus and selected regions of Ukraine: Luhansk, Donetsk, Crimea.
– USA, unless you have the US add-on.
❌ Trip cancellation: is not covered.
Monthly payments: You can either pay for an established travel period or sign-up for automatic monthly renewal (every 28 days) for up to 364 days.❌ Language limitations: Website and support available in English only.
Covers visits to home: For every 90 days of coverage while traveling abroad, you are covered for up to 30 days in your home country (15 days if your home country is the US), for unforeseen eligible medical conditions.❌ Minimum of days: A minimum of 5-day coverage is required.
Children free of charge: 2 children under 10 per family (1 per adult) can be included on your insurance free of charge.🟡 Purchases in USD only: Since the purchase is available only in USD, foreigners may have additional tax (which can be avoided when you pay with an International Bank account).
Sports: It covers most amateur/non-professional sports and activities such as bungee jumping, scuba diving, ski, snowboarding, and others. With the exception of high risk activities*. 🟡 Promo codes: At the moment, they are not offering promo and discount codes.
Easy to cancel: In case you have a recurring plan, you can cancel it directly on their website.
SafetyWing’s Pros & Cons

As you can see, there are more pros than cons. I would say that the biggest cons for me are the deductible and the lack of coverage for electronics and trip cancelation. I would definitely expect electronics coverage from a travel insurance focused on digital nomads.

The other cons are quite common among travel insurance policies, so I don’t really consider them a big deal. Although, bear in mind that each traveler may have different needs and priorities.

Why you should consider SafetyWing travel Insurance?

After all, considering the cost and that we usually don’t need to make claims (I hope it stays this way for both you and I 🙏🏻😂), this the most flexible and affordable travel insurance.

Note that it is not only great for digital nomads, but for general travelers on a sabbatical or long trips as well. Also, I find it incredible that you can add kids to the policy for free!

Fox Tips 🦊:

  • Get an electronic device insurance in parallel. This way you can travel the world with peace of mind.
  • Understand your own scenario. Read the full policy carefully and consider the SafetyWing travel insurance reviews that are more aligned to your own needs.
  • No matter the company, make sure you purchase a travel insurance policy whenever you travel abroad. The cost of medical care can be extremely expensive in some countries.
