We recommend our partner Ygarapé Tour, who, in addition to booking tours in Bonito, helped us organize an itinerary considering what we wanted to visit, how much we could spend, and the travel time available. When searching for a package, remember to inform the agency if you need to include transportation to the attractions. And if you are not Brazilian and need an interpreter, there is an additional fee of approximately R$500*.

Things to do in Bonito, MS

Drift snorkeling and dive

The most famous tours are drift snorkeling and diving in the crystalline waters of Bonito. Below we mention some places that offer such activities, but first, let’s go to some tips:

  • In order not to contaminate the groundwater, it is forbidden to use chemical products (sunscreen, repellent, moisturizer, hair cream, etc.) in the water for snorkeling tours in the springs. Remember that traveling is not enough; it is important to practice responsible tourism 💚.
  • For the joy of those afraid of cold water, the average water temperature in the region is 24 degrees at any time of the year, and the use of neoprene clothing is mandatory, which also helps to maintain body temperature.

Recanto Ecológico Rio da Prata – Drift snorkeling in Rio da Prata

If you want to go snorkeling in Bonito, know that the tour to Recanto Ecológico Rio da Prata includes activity on two rivers: Rio Olho D’Água and Rio da Prata. In addition to traditional snorkeling, Recanto offers ecological trails, bird watching, scuba diving, and regional lunch. Something very nice to highlight is that they use an ecological boat powered by solar energy to take the groups to the floating point on the Rio da Prata.

The drift snorkeling on the Rio da Prata is in Jardim, a neighboring city of Bonito. To enjoy the trip, you can compose the itinerary with more attractions, such as Lagoa Misteriosa and Buraco das Araras.

Lagoa Misteriosa

It is the only ‘dolina’ open to visitors in Mato Grosso do Sul, a funnel-shaped circular limestone depression, and in this case, with incredibly blue waters. The mystery is in the name and depth: the maximum they managed to reach was 220 meters, but without touching the bottom. The blue immensity enchants visitors who can hire snorkeling or scuba diving tours.

Oh, and important: the tour of Lagoa Misteriosa only takes place in the dry season, from April to October, when the visibility of the water is better.

Natural Aquarium

The fluctuation at the Natural Aquarium is within the Baía Bonita Ecological Reserve. The famous drift snorkeling passes through three rivers: Baía Bonita, Formoso, and Formosinho. A support boat is always with the group, which is why it is a tour in Bonito suitable for children even under 5 years old. It is still possible to enjoy other activities such as zip lines, waterfalls, and swimming pools.

The common area has free parking, a restaurant, changing room, luggage storage, an amphitheate, an ‘almofadário’, a place to lie down on cushions (great for resting after the tour!), a swimming pool, and a souvenir shop. It is interesting to point out that this ecological reserve is very concerned with the sustainable socio-economic development of the region through ecotourism.

Nascentes da Serra

Inaugurated in early 2022, this attraction in Bonito combines two activities: snorkeling along the Azul River and a boat trip along the Salobra River. A differential here is the depth of the river: as it is a little deeper at some points, it is possible to do apnea diving. After enjoying this combo, you enjoy a regional lunch included in the package.

Praia da Figueira

Close to the center, Praia da Figueira is a resort full of activities such as zip lining, stand-up, kayaking, slackline, sand volleyball court, and even a pool with a water slide. Nascente Azul

This attraction appears in an area that was being depredated by livestock. After years of study and work, Nascente Azul was opened to the public, and today is one of the most popular tours in Bonito. Here it is possible to float in the source of the Bonito River, located in a crevice approximately 7 meters deep, a characteristic that allows, in addition to snorkeling, the practice of free-diving and apnea.

Another super different diving activity is the Underwater Museum, the first submerged freshwater museum in the world. The museum has works by local artists and refers to the theme of sustainability and preservation. This diving is with a cylinder up to 5 meters deep, and even children from 10 years old can experience that feeling of “diving into an aquarium”.

For those who want even more adrenaline, the suggestion is to enjoy the zip line, the pendulum, the ‘aqualouco’, and some trails to the waterfall and cascade. And to rest, the structure of the resort is complete, with natural pools, a beach, a restaurant, and changing rooms.

Entrance fee: entrance to the resort from R$ 75; snorkeling from R$ 255.

Caves

Did you know that the predominant biome in this region of Mato Grosso do Sul is called Cerrado, but it is also a transition area with the Atlantic Forest? The caves (‘cavernas’ or ‘grutas’ in Portuguese) are made of limestone rocks that originated in a possible ocean floor called Mar de Corumbá. It’s interesting, isn’t it? Let’s meet some of them!

The nerdy Fox answers! 🦊

What is the difference between stalactites and stalagmites?
Let’s see who remembers the geography lessons! These two are formed in a super slow process from the infiltration and dripping of water inside the caves. To give you an idea, the formation of a centimeter can take from 10 to 100 years, depending on where they are. Stalactites are formations that come from the ceiling; stalagmites, on the other hand, form from the ground. After many years of sediment deposits, the two can unite and form a column.

Gruta do Mimoso

We can start with the subject of caves, still discussing  the previous topic: floating and diving. Yes, it is possible to go snorkeling in a cave! The experience is unforgettable and new in Bonito. Gruta do Mimoso was closed for more than 15 years and reopened to visitors only in 2022. Considered one of the most beautiful flooded caves in the world, it has several rooms but only allows floating and beginner diving in the first one.

Curiosity: the first name of the cave was Casa da Pedra, but at the insistence of the ox Mimoso, who was always next to the cave, the owner had to rename it.

Abismo Anhumas

The descent of the 72 meters of Abismo Anhumas is the dream of many people, and it is not for less. The feeling of electrically rappelling down a hole in the earth and suddenly coming across a large gallery with a well of blue water is indescribable and worth every penny. Walking through the abyss can be just for contemplation or include floating or scuba diving up to 18 meters.

The experience already starts the day before, when the team meets in the center of Bonito to explain the tour and answer questions. At this point, it is necessary to sign the safety terms and try on the neoprene suit that fits your body when entering the water. On the day of the tour, just enjoy it 🤪.

Fox Tips 🦊

  • It is by far Elaine’s favorite tour in Bonito. If you can, do it!
  • For the ride to be even more enjoyable, go with closed boots to avoid hurting your feet on the rocks during the descent, and go with leggings, as the rappelling chair can tighten your legs if you are wearing shorts.
  • Take a jacket, it’s cold down there and if you go in the water, it will be even more useful when you leave.
  • If you have a GoPro and want to film the descent, take a grip to attach to their support. The rental of the stand + led for lighting costs R$50*.

Gruta do Lago Azul

Considered the postcard of the city, Gruta do Lago Azul is a natural monument in Bonito. It has bluish crystal clear waters and geological formations in perfect condition. It is not allowed to enter the water; only observe and record its beauty!

Tip for photographers on duty: depending on the time of year and the time of day, a beam of light enters exactly in the upper opening of the cave, making the color of the water even more vibrant. Find out about the best season and time to register the colors in their maximum splendor.

In the same complex of caves, you can visit the Cathedral Cave, of unique beauty and formations that even give the name to the cave due to its shape, in addition to the Caves of São Miguel, dry caves, which are among the oldest in the entire planet.

Where are the adventurers? We have gathered more places here for you to be in the midst of nature, focusing now on waterfalls (‘cachoeiras’ in Portuguese), trails, tree climbing, and some more extreme sports.

Estância Mimosa

Estância Mimosa is a great place for those who want to enjoy nature through trails, waterfalls, and bird watching – and with the tranquility of supporting a beautiful project that, like us 🦊🎉, won the Braztoa Sustainability Award in 2022

Part of the Rio da Prata Group, Estância Mimosa is RPPN, a Private Natural Heritage Reserve, in which 65% of the farm’s area is protected as a reserve and is an area for the release of animals. Some environmental projects are the vegetable garden and agroforestry, in addition to the use of solar panels to generate energy – as can be seen when sailing with the silent boat used during a section of the tour to Cachoeira do Surucuá.

A regional lunch with organic salads from the garden is included in the tour, and there is also a small shop with handicrafts from nearby communities.
