We close our eyes and savor the notes. A melody of chocolate, caramel, nuts, and coffee. Bold yet smooth. We take a sip. Enjoy a pairing. Immerse ourselves in the classic composition of this Brazilian region called Cerrado Mineiro, perfectly harmonized with the unique flavors only the state of Minas Gerais can offer. A symphony for the senses. The Cerrado Mineiro Coffee Route is music, flavor, memory, and a warm embrace.
Coffee is, by nature, a pause. Even while boosting our energy, it’s during that coffee break that we rest, step away from screens, and enjoy something tasty on the side. Experiencing all of this right at the source—living the Cerrado Mineiro culture from bean to brew—is an opportunity that’s as rich as it is flavorful.
But don’t stop at coffee: this region also offers visits to wineries, cheese producers, and distilleries that will awaken your senses at every turn. If you love exploring new flavors, you’re in the right place! And if you’ve never tasted the delights of Cerrado Mineiro, the doors are open, and the aroma of fresh coffee is already in the air… can you smell it?
Cerrado Mineiro Coffee Route: our guide
Did you know that Brazil is the largest coffee exporter in the world? That Minas Gerais is the top coffee-producing state in Brazil, and about 3% of the country’s coffee is grown in the city of Patrocínio, located in the Cerrado Mineiro region? It’s here that a new tourism route, launched by Sebrae Minas, has come to life: the Cerrado Mineiro Coffee Route.
In June 2025, Elaine and I had the pleasure of traveling at the invitation of Sebrae to discover the flavors and experiences this region has to offer. We were amazed by the tourism potential of the route, which also includes visits to wineries, cheese producers, and distilleries, benefiting countless families and local producers.

Unlike the century-old coffee tradition found in Southern Minas Gerais (which also has a tourism route), coffee only arrived in the Cerrado Mineiro region about 50 years ago. It transformed an area once considered a zone of rural poverty into a hub for specialty coffees.
If you love coffee, food, technology, and nature, it’s time to start planning your trip. Shall we? 😊
Where is the Cerrado Mineiro Coffee Route located?
The route is in Minas Gerais state, Brazil, at the heart of the Cerrado Mineiro region, spanning the cities of Patrocínio, Patos de Minas, Monte Carmelo, Cruzeiro da Fortaleza, and Carmo do Paranaíba.

How to get there and move around the region
You can arrive by plane to a nearby city and rent a car, travel with your own vehicle, or hire a transfer service.
Arriving by plane
Below are some airports near the Cerrado Mineiro Coffee Route:
- Patos de Minas (MG) – 76 km / 47 miles
- Araxá (MG) – 110 km / 68 miles
- Uberlândia (MG) – 150 km / 93 miles *Most popular option
- Uberaba (MG) – 190 km / 118 miles
- Paracatu (MG) – 250km / 155 miles
- Ribeirão Preto (SP) – 320 km / 199 miles
- Belo Horizonte (MG) – 410 km / 255 miles
- Brasília (DF) – 485 km / 301 miles
Renting a car or driving your own
You can rent a car upon arrival at your chosen airport or travel with your own vehicle. There’s no need for a 4×4 or a pickup truck — a standard car will do just fine.
Most of the roads are single-lane highways, but they were in good condition (at least along the Uberlândia–Patrocínio–Patos de Minas route). Even when driving on dirt roads to access farms or rural areas, we had no issues!
Transfers and local tour services on the Cerrado Mineiro Coffee Route
Another great option is to book a transfer, especially if you’re traveling in a group. For example, we arrived by plane in Uberlândia and continued our journey to Patrocínio — a trip of approximately two hours — with the support of Receptivo Coffee Roaster Porto Feliz, which also guided us through the experiences on the Cerrado Mineiro Coffee Route.
The service operates for groups of 10 or more people. To give you an idea of costs, the group transfer between Uberlândia and Patrocínio is R$80* per passenger.
For trips to nearby towns or activities at the fazendas (Portuguese for farms), prices vary depending on the chosen experience, and scheduling in advance is required. If you’re traveling alone or in a small group, you may be able to join pre-scheduled groups, in case there’s availability.
For more information about transfers, tours, and guided services, you can get in touch with Poliana.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit the Cerrado Mineiro Coffee Route is during the harvest season, which runs from late May to the end of August. In June and July, the harvest is at its peak, offering a unique opportunity to see coffee cherries up close, taste the fresh fruit straight from the plant, and experience the entire process—right up to the roasting stage. And of course, don’t forget the highlight: tasting the final product!
The flowering season occurs between September and October, which is another beautiful time to visit. However, from October to March, the region enters its rainy season, which may impact your exploration.

Events on the Cerrado Mineiro Coffee Route
The event lineup in the region features fairs, festivals, and workshops all year long. There’s a real focus on promoting coffee culture not just commercially, but also for the locals.
While visiting Patrocínio, we were lucky enough to catch the Festival da Colheita (Harvest Festival in Portuguese). The event had booths with local products, coffee, crafts, and a well-curated food court offering dishes, snacks, and signature drinks — all highlighting specialty coffee as the star. On stage, dance performances and live shows by local bands kept the vibe fun and lively.
You can keep up with the event calendar right on the Cerrado Mineiro Coffee Route website!
Trip length
Nuhhh (as they say in Minas Gerais)… that’s totally up to you! You could spend a weekend or even a whole month exploring it since the Coffee Route has tons of experiences to offer — all of which are detailed below! It really depends on how much time you’ve got and what you’re willing to invest.
We spent a Brazilian long weekend in the region and, excluding travel time, we had three full days to explore — and it was fantastic! It’s a lovely destination for long weekends, especially if you’re already in Southeast Brazil and looking for a unique road trip experience.
Our itinerary lasted 3 days, and here’s everything we did:

Despite its large property, Marcelo explained that the family is committed to sustainability, relying on at least 70% natural herbicides and integrating other tree species into the system to help mitigate potential climate challenges such as strong winds and drought.

Other experiences in Patrocínio, Brazil
What to do in Patos de Minas
Fazenda Reserva Heitor
At the Coffee, Ecology, and Minas Culture Tour at Reserva Heitor, you’re warmly welcomed with a lot of care and—of course—a coffee tasting. As you’re sipping, you can chat with the owners and staff about the farm’s history and the coffee production of the region. Afterward, you’ll get the chance to stroll through the coffee farm and even experience what it’s like to harvest coffee in a unique way—from the top of a harvesting machine!

One of the biggest highlights (literally) of the visit is climbing onto the harvesting machine. From up there, you can enjoy incredible views of the coffee fields and get an up-close look at how the vibration-based harvesting process works. This technique is commonly used in the Cerrado Mineiro coffee plantations thanks to the region’s unique topography—a feature not seen in many other coffee-growing areas of Brazil.
You can also explore one of the three ecological trails, each offering varying difficulty levels, where you’ll get to visit the reserve and a lovely stream. After all these adventures, it’s time to indulge in a hearty mineiro-style lunch—served right in the garden of the main farmhouse. Get ready for mouthwatering homemade flavors and delightful desserts—the freshly prepared coffee flan and sweet milk caramel doce de leite are absolutely out of this world!
Sustainability🌱: Purchased in 1994, the property went through a significant regeneration process led by Sheyla. She reforested the degraded soil by planting over 12,000 trees and even brought a creek back to life. The farm has also been adopting sustainable practices like producing organic fertilizers, using biological solutions (fungi and bacteria) to control pests and diseases, reusing water, and running 100% of the administration and post-harvest operations on solar energy.

Fazenda Chuá – Casa Bruxel Coffee & Wines
The Chuá Farm, owned by Casa Bruxel, offers a unique two-in-one experience, delighting both coffee and wine lovers. Your visit kicks off with a coffee tasting paired with traditional treats, including a truly MEMORABLE pamonha cake! Guests also enjoy a chat about the farm’s history, which began cultivating coffee in 1985 and now employs over 1,000 registered workers. The tour then takes you to the coffee fields, where you can pick coffee cherries straight from the trees for a deeply immersive experience.
You won’t have to walk far to explore the vineyards—just cross the property’s main road, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by the world of grapes and fine wines produced in the region. At the end of the day, enjoy a beautiful sunset disappearing behind the hills, paired with a perfect harmony of wines and local delicacies. Highlights include the Chuá Sauvignon Blanc (Elaine’s favorite!), Rosé, Syrah, and the unforgettable cheese bread served with slow-roasted pork DB-style.

Where to shop
If there happens to be a festival in the region during your trip, it’s a great opportunity to shop, as many local entrepreneurs showcase and sell their products at these events.
Many farms include a coffee as a souvenir of the experience, but you can buy more to take home if you wish (it’s hard to resist, by the way!). You can purchase directly at the farms and roasteries during the experiences, or at Dulcerrado Café, a coffee shop that sells its own products as well as those from the region. Additionally, some hotels offer an area with products from Cerrado Mineiro, including coffee, wine, and cachaça.
Another delightful surprise we had was tasting the gourmet coconut candies by A Bala Carioca. These homemade candies melt in your mouth and come in various flavors, including coffee. If I were you, I’d place an order!
International eSIM
If you want a reliable, hassle-free way to stay connected while traveling in Brazil, consider getting an eSIM from Airalo. It’s a convenient solution that lets you purchase and activate a local data plan without needing a physical SIM card. Simply download the Airalo app, choose the plan that fits your needs and budget, and enjoy internet access throughout your trip.
