If you found this article, it probably is because you’ve heard about Itacaré, Bahia, a city by the coast full of natural beauties! After 15 days of discovering this place, I’m ready to show you how this is a complete destination, with beaches, waterfall, trails, cocoa eco-farming, and many unique experiences. See where to stay, how to get there, and what to do in Itacaré during the day, night, rain, or shine. Set up your travel itinerary.

The municipality of Itacaré is located in the region of the Cocoa Coast, south of Bahia.

How to get to Itacaré, Bahia

To get to Itacaré by airplane, the closest airport is Ilhéus Airport – Jorge Amado (IOS). Another option is to arrive in the capital of Bahia through the Salvador International Airport (SSA), where the offer of a plane ticket is more significant and cheaper than the Ilhéus airport, from there you can go to Itacaré, but the travel will be much longer.

How to get from Ilhéus to Itacaré

From Ilhéus Airport, you can rent a car, use a private transfer, or a taxi/Uber.

To get to Itacaré by bus, you will need to use a taxi/Uber to Ilhéus Bus Terminal, and from there, you can get a bus from Rota company to Itacaré, which will cost about R$25*/one-way. The travel is about 1h20 by car and 2 hours by bus.

If you are looking for a company to do a private transfer from Ilhéus to Itacaré, you can look for Alessandro from Margueta Turismo, who will charge R$300* for the couple.

How to get from Salvador to Itacaré

To go from Salvador to Itacarérent a car at the airport, cross the ferry from São Joaquim Terminal until the Bom Despacho Terminal in the Itaparica island, and get the BA-534 road, and then get the BA-001. The entire trip takes approximately 5 hours. The price for a small car on the ferry is R$50.60* during the week and R$71.70* on weekends.

For a more economical trip, you can go from Salvador to Itacaré by bus by taking a Uber from the airport to the São Joaquim Terminal, then the ferry-boat to Bom Despacho, and then a bus from one of these two companies: Cidade Sol or Águia Branca.

The ferry cost for pedestrians is R$5.60* during the week and R$7.40* on weekends. The bus to Itacaré can cost R$60* to R$80*.

How to get around in the region

The easiest way to get around in Itacaré is to drive your car or rent one, but if this is not possible, the other options are:

  • Walk: you can access many beaches by walking;
  • Bus: the bus will get you close to your destination, but you will probably have to take a walk after getting off the bus.
  • Taxi or motorcycle taxi: There are fixed prices for getting around inside the tourist center. The cab charges R$30* and the motorcycle taxi R$7*. Outside this area, it is necessary to negotiate with the driver;
  • Bike: you can rent a bike;
  • Travel agency: travel agencies usually offer transfers;
  • Private transfer: if you want a more exclusive transfer, companies such as Margueta Turismo can help you.

Best time to visit Itacaré

Itacaré has similar weather all year, with just a slight variation of rain and temperature (average 68ºF and 84ºF). Even so, little details can make a difference when planning your trip.

Some bad news for your pocket is that the best time to go to Itacaré is during the summer high season, which makes everything more expensive. For a more economical trip, you can go between August and October, when the temperature rises again and the rains have diminished.

Fonte: climate-data.org

Between April and July, the temperature falls a little bit, producing more rain, but even so, you can have sunny and hot days. This season is suitable for those who want to surf because of the wind that produces bigger waves.

It is worth going between July and October if you want to do the humpback whale watching tour.

Where to stay in Itacaré

There are several hotels in Itacaré, both in the main part of the village and near the most isolated beaches.

If you, just like me, arrive in the city without your vehicle, it is essential to stay in a good location. I advise staying close to the bus station and to Pedro Longo’s street (known as Pituba), where you will find stores, travel agencies, bars, and restaurants.

I chose to stay at Pousada Portal da Concha since it is:

  • 4 minutes walking distance from Pituba;
  • 8 minutes walking distance from the bus terminal;
  • 6 minutes walking distance from Concha Beach;
  • In front of Coroinha Beach and a motocycle taxi stop.
Hotel in Itacare - Portal da Concha
Elaine at Portal da Concha – one of the best hotels in Itacaré considering cost-benefit

Besides the localization, what I liked about Portal da Concha hotel in Itacaré was:

Structure and services: the accommodation has a swimming pool, TV lounge, game room, and a restaurant that serves a delicious breakfast. There is also a massage room with multiple services such as lymphatic drainage, modeling massage with bamboo, and relaxing massage, among others (value R$150*/hour)

Commitment to recycling: the initiative of the public recycling program is recent and doesn’t support all of the city, but even so, before this service began, Portal da Concha already did recycle with the help of a project called Recicla Itacaré.

Therapeutic garden: they have a therapeutic garden where guests can use its medicinal herbs to make their own tea.

Breakfast: Delicious. I was addicted to Iracema’s tapiocas!

Service: The staff is very nice and made me feel at home. When I got sick 💩, one of the girls from the kitchen gave me a lifesaver mixture of water, lemon, and tapioca, which helped me a lot! Thank you, Gil 💕.

Excellent tips: Luciana França, the hotel manager, made all the difference in my trip. She introduced me to the best tours and agencies in Itacaré, contributing to our goal of getting to know the destination beyond the beaches.

Accessible prices: they have daily rates starting from R$250*.

What to do in Itacaré

We have separated 27 tips for attractions and tours that will make you understand that there is a lot to do in Itacaré, making this a destination for all types of travelers. Check them out:

1 – Enjoy the beaches

Itacaré has paradisiacal beaches (“praias” in Portuguese)! But it is important to know that some of them require you to go on a hike.

If you are an adventure and trekking lover you have to visit Jeribucaçu, Arruda, Prainha and São João. Are you looking for beaches that are easier to access? So go to Concha Beach, Ribera, Resende or drive to Pé da Serra Beach in Serra Grande. Do you want to know about surfing? Resende, Prainha, Tiririca and Engenhoca are my favorite ones.

Check out the article where we show you everything about Itacaré beaches!

2 – Refreshing at the waterfall

Beyond beaches, Itacaré is a differentiated destination because it also includes waterfalls (“cachoeiras” in Portuguese) for lovers of fresh and cool water. The main options are Cleandro Waterfall, Usina, Tijuípe, Noré and Bom Sossego.

Usually, the owners of the properties where the waterfalls are located have opening hours and charge an entrance fee.

You can find more details and information in our article about the Itacaré waterfalls.

3 – Hawaiian Canoe & Stand-Up Paddle Tour

This city is also ideal Hawaiian canoe and stand-up paddle tours. One of my favorite tours in Itacaré was Hawaiian Canoe, leaving from Concha Beach with a group to know Cleando Waterfall for half of the day. I highly recommend it for those who want to exercise while enjoying the beautiful path of the Contas River, mangroves, and the three waterfalls of the cascade.

Price: the rent of a SUP board in Concha Beach is R$50*/hour, and the single paddle Hawaiian canoe is R$60* per person/hour. The Hawaiian canoe tour costs R$185* per person; it includes entry to Cleandro Waterfall, water, and a picnic. Important: it is necessary to have minimum physical conditioning to do the half-day tour.

4 – Know the historical Taboquinhas

For those who want to change the sand and saltwater for dusty roads and freshwater, Taboquinhas is one of the neighborhoods with old cocoa farms dating more than 300 years.

What to do in Itacaré and Taboquinhas: Sala do Vila Rosa
Vila Rosa mansion in Taboquinhas, Itacaré

There you can also practice radical sports, such as rafting, rappelling, or just a refreshing swim in the waterfall.

Direction: The easier way to get to Taboquinhas is to have your vehicle or rent one, but if you prefer, you can go by taxi or a private transfer Alessandro of Margueta Adventure. For economic travelers the other option is to take the bus at 5h30 am (No, I didn’t mistype it, 😅 – there is only one bus to Taboquinhas that goes in the morning and returns at the end of the day).

5 – Visit the cocoa and chocolate farms

In Taboquinhas it is possible to visit cocoa farms and learn about the processes, from planting to the production of this fruit that is part of this Bahian region known as Costa do Cacau (Cocoa Coast).

During these visits you are going to taste the cocoa, the honey of cocoa (nectar of the gods that I love so much 😋) that can be served with a drink, and a lot of types of chocolates.

Here are two options for you to visit:

Vila Rosa

Vila Rosa is one of the most famous cocoa farms in Itacaré, known for its big old house with a cocoa plantation located right in the Taboquinhas.

If you want to schedule your visit previously you can have a guided tour to understand the plantation, the harvest, the production, taste the products, and visit the chocolate factory.

Cocoa Farm in Taboquinhas

It is a wonderful place to spend a couple of hours, the big old house is beautiful, the tour is nice and you can use the stone swimming pool or a kayak in the farm dam.

Ticket: R$50* per person (guided tour included)

Fazenda Taboquinhas

If you like a more rural experience, the Fazenda Taboquinhas is the right place for you! You can spend half a period or an entire day there with Sr. Osvaldo, a small farmer in the region who practices permaculture and enchants everyone when your eyes shine while talking about cocoa and coffee.

Besides cocoa, the Fazenda Taboquinhas also produce their own chocolate, and the ones who do the one-day tour can delight themselves with the excellent food of Dona Laura.

Duration and prices: the simpler tour has 3 hours and costs R$80* per person, being requiring at least three people. I recommend doing the one-day tour (I did it myself), where you arrive early at the farm, have a delicious breakfast, and lear everything about cocoa and chocolate, have lunch, and visit the Noré Waterfall in the afternoon. The price is R$175* per person.

6 – Tree climbing and zip-lining

Do you want to know what to do in Itacaré with children? The answer is Conduru Ecoturismo. In the space of the company located in Ribeira beach for more than 17 years, your whole family can have some fun practicing tree climbing and zip-lining.

The tree climbing has nineteen obstacles with a maximum height of 16 meters. Although it is considered moderately difficult, it can be done by children over 1.5 meters tall and weighing at least 25 kg. For adults, the maximum weight is 100 kg. It is necessary to wear comfortable closed shoes or hiking sandals.

Elaine practicing tree climbing and zip-lining

The circuit ends in two zip-lining. The first is 280 meters long and 40 meters high, passing over the beach; the second is smaller and takes you to the tour’s end point. This whole circuit takes between 1.5 and 2 hours.

If you prefer, it is possible to do just the zip-lining without doing the tree climbing circuit.

Company: Conduru Ecoturismo

Hours: high season – tree climbing leaves from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The zip-line goes until 4 p.m.

Ticket: R$100* the all circuit / R$50* just the zip-line at the beach

7 – Diving

Itacaré has a lot of diving spots, with reefs and corals making its marine life so interesting. The perfect time to do this activity is from October until April, when there is less rain and wind, making it easier to see under the sea.

It is possible to dive in shallower water, up to 4 meters, or in deeper water, 20 meters deep.

8 – Four-beach track + Tijuípe Waterfall

What do you think about exploring Tijuípe waterfall, Itacarezinho beach, Engenhoca, Havaizinho, and Camboinha, all on the same day? The famous four-beach track (called in Portuguese ‘Trilha Das 4 Praias’) has 4,4km and even if it is considered an easy track, it has uphill, downhill steps, and walking across a log.

Company: Paraíso Turismo

Ticket: R$120* per person.

Ps: the benefit of hiring an agency is that they offer a round trip to Itacaré, letting you in the beginning of the track and getting you in the end. With this, it is possible to know and enjoy all the beaches in one day. The presence of a local guide also makes a lot of difference, giving more security to the visitors and making the experience more immersive by sharing information and curiosities about the region.

LMTM🦊 Tip: Use hiking sandals or hiking boots. It is worth bringing hydration packs and wearing UV Protection clothes if you have one.

9 – Get to know the Baleia Jubarte Project

Baleia Jubarte means humpback whale. The species was almost instigated because of the hunt until it was forbidden in the 60s in Brasil. With conservation projects, in 2014 the humpback whale population in Brazil was practically restored.

The Projeto Baleia Jubarte existed for more than 30 years and was created to study and protect those whales. Nowadays, they have three fronts: source, education, and conservation politics.

Itacaré is one of the regions where it is possible to see this whale. The project arrived in the city in 2005, and since 2020 it counts with a space in Ponta do Xaréu offering environment education with a humpback whale replica, bones, and interactive panels.

10 – Humpback whale-watching tour

The season of humpback whale observation is between July and October. You can do this tour with a boat from an agency or walk to the viewpoint Mirante Serra Grande.

Whale watching on board must be done responsibly, without harming marine life, and guided by a biologist to provide environmental education. We recommend doing this tour in Itacaré with Brazil Trip Tour, one of the partners of the Projeto Baleia Jubarte.

On the strip of sand where the Contas River meets Pontal Beach is the Iemanjá Beach Club. A hut with beds and hammocks for relaxing, drinks, snacks, and events ranging from forró to electronic music parties.

The place is really chill and has a beautiful view mixing the scenery of the river and the sea, which gets even better with the sunset.

13 – Surf class & Surf camps

Itacaré is also a good place to learn to surf. Engenhoca Beach is one of the favorite spots for surfers and it has a surf school for beginners.

This sport is an interesting way to connect with the sea and yourself since surfing demands tranquility and presence. But don’t worry if you don’t have these skills, that’s why you will take your first surf lesson in Itacaré. You can also find schools to book surf trips and surf camps in Itacaré.

Besides, with them, you have a guidance of a native guide that brings historical information and curiosities, shows you typical fruits, giant bromeliad, and much more.

15 – Cooking class

What about learning a new recipe and knowing more about the local culture? In this cooking class, you will learn how to do a complete Bahian meal with moqueca (coconut milk base), pirão (manioc flour cream), farofa de banana da terra (toasted manioc flour mixture), and a regional drink. Who leads the activity is C. Mestre Comprido.

Itacaré is located in the Cocoa Coast region, with preserved areas of Mata Atlântica and huge biodiversity. Spring is the best moment to practice birdwatching.

17 – Rafting in Taboquinhas

I don’t know about you, but before this trip, I couldn’t imagine that it was possible to practice rafting in Itacaré.

With class III and IV rapids, the Contas River is considered one of Brazil’s best places to practice rafting. And the coolest thing is that the course is beautiful, with the right to pass between canyons and everything.

How much does it cost to go rafting in the Contas River:

  • Rafting – between R$90* and 100* per person.

LMTM🦊 Tip: Go with light, comfortable clothes, preferably with sun protection, and quickly dry. Wear swimwear underneath and shoes that can get wet. Bring dry clothes to change into afterward, and there is a place to shower. If you have a GoPro, you can take it on the ride. The helmet has a clip to fit the camera but don’t forget to take the fitting accessory.

Note: If you want to stay in Taboquinhas, Ativa Aventura has options for camping space, one suite, and two one-room apartments. The minimum stay is two nights.

18 – Artisanal fishing

It is a cool way to integrate with the local culture and knowledge. Beyond that is a delicious gastronomic experience.

In artisanal fishing in the Contas River, you will learn how to use the cast nest, a bamboo pole, and even siripóia to hunt siris. At the end of the tour, you can enjoy fresh fish baked in the coals with accompaniments.

19 – Capoeira class

The class takes place at the Cultural Association in Porto de Trás, which has an amazing view of the Contas River.

20 – Rappel at Noré Waterfall

On the Coiudo River, which flows into the Contas River, is the Noré Waterfall, 15 meters high and perfect for rappelling down. The descent begins with the help of an instructor, and the last 9 meters take place underwater.

Even the most inexperienced in this activity can venture out. Besides the sport, you will make a short trail on a cocoa farm, and afterward, you can take a bath in the waterfall and relax.

LMTM🦊 Tip: Besides the bathing suit, it’s worth wearing light, comfortable, quick-drying clothes. Attention women who want to go only in a bikini, the force of the waterfall can make the bikini ties undo, or the pieces come out of place 🙈. I didn’t do this specific rappel, but in Maresias, for example, I wore a top, leggings, and a sun protection t-shirt from Columbia Sportswear.

Company: Ativa Aventura

Duration: About 2 hours

Price: R$80* per person, and four people are needed.

21 – Canoeing in the moonlight

I can’t imagine a more spectacular opportunity than canoeing down the Contas River on moonlit nights and clear skies. It is an unusual, interesting, and beautiful trip.

For relaxation, the native guide Comprido plays the berimbau and enchants everyone with popular songs by the sea.

Agency: Itacaré Horizontes

Duration: 3 hours

Ps: It includes water and cocoa honey (if I were you I would not miss the cocoa honey for anything 🤤)

Price: R$160* for a solo traveler or R$130* per person.

22 – Eat grilled fish for dinner at Prainha

Prainha is one of the most visited beaches in Itacaré but during the day. The proposal here is also to enjoy all the beauty it shows during the night. Starting the trail close to sunset time, you can enjoy it when you arrive at the beach. Then taste the fish on the barbecue to the sound of the berimbau.

23 – Afternoon at Ponta do Xaréu Viewpoint

Mirante Ponta do Xaréu is located between Coroa Beach and Concha Beach. It is a perfect place to enjoy the sunset, and you will likely find musicians there at this time. At night you can also stop there to admire the starry sky and the night view.

24 – Spend the day at Serra Grande

Serra Grande is a small and quiet village located in the municipality of Uruçuca, about 30km from Itacaré. We did this private tour with Alessandro from Margueta Turismo, who picked me up at my accommodation and took me to Mirante Serra Grande (lookout), the beautiful Prainha (of Serra Grande), and Pé de Serra beach.

If you love paradise beaches with natural pools, don’t miss Prainha! It was one of the best beaches I visited in the region, but remember that you have to walk to get there.

things to do in serra grande
Prainha at Serra Grande and lunch at Cabana Pé de Serra

To finish, relax in the Cabana Pé de Serra, located at one of the most accessible beaches in the region for children and elderly people, the Praia Pé de Serra. The hut has private parking, clean bathrooms, showers, drinks, and delicious food.

Those who want, can also stop at the Tijuípe Waterfall and Café com Cacau on the way back.

Private Transfer: Margueta Adventure

Price of the transfer: R$350 to the couple. From 3 people on, it is R$130 per person.

25 – Visit Península de Maraú

Maraú is about 55 minutes from Itacaré and is still a less explored destination, with very preserved ecosystems. With Paraíso Turismo, you will make the trip with a 4×4 Land Rover Off-Road.

In the Marau Peninsula you will see natural pools, wonderful beaches (Algodões, Saquaíra, and Taipu de Fora), lagoons, sandbanks, coral reefs, mangroves, natural fields, forest types of the Atlantic Forest with varied fauna and flora, ecological trails and viewpoints.

26 – Delight yourself with the city’s diverse gastronomy

In Itacaré, you will find a wide variety of cuisine for all tastes and budgets. It is a great place to try traditional Bahian and beach town foods. One point that is also very interesting is the diversity of beaches, mangroves, and rivers, which brings the freshness of the seafood to the dish.

Here are some suggestions for restaurants in Itacaré:

  • Tia Deth: The most famous moquecas of Itacaré are here.
  • Café com Cacau: Get ready to try cacao cake with nibs, cheese bread with cupuaçu jam, and typical regional dishes.
  • Jiló: Contemporary Brazilian cuisine with excellent service and a cozy atmosphere.
restaurantes em Itacaré

For lovers of craft beer, there is a special brewery in the region that uses local ingredients, the Conduru Viva beer. It has options with Cocoa Honey, Cocoa, Cupuaçu, and Capim Santo. The brewery is in Serra Grande, but you can find this beer in some restaurants in Itacaré. It’s worth a try.

27 – Shop (consciously, of course!) and enjoy Pituba street and the Passarela da Vila

Rua Pituba (formally known as Pedro Longo street) is the main street in Itacaré, with stores, bars, ice cream parlors, and restaurants. It is busiest in the late afternoon and evening, but some commercial options are open during the day. Close by is the charming Passarela da Vila, which has the same style.

Walking through charming streets and finding various stores is much better than going to any mall. Here you will find ateliers, local artisan stores, beach fashion, gifts, lots of chocolate, and even stores with good sustainability practices. One of them is Espaço Semente, which sells reusable products that help travelers reduce waste in their travels and daily lives.

Fabiani Julianni - biojoias na bahia

Photo: Elaine Villatoro

One artist that caught my attention was Fabiani Julianni. She transforms natural elements into bio-jewelry. The metals and stones used by Fabi come from certified sources, and the pearls are from breeding farms. They are not taken from the ecosystem and generate income for families on the coast. The artist uses sun coral, considered a pest because it spreads easily, killing other species.

Things to do in Itacaré at night

After the day trips, you can prepare for a night full of activities in town. Here are the best options for what to do at night in Itacaré:

28 – Appreciate and support street artists

You will likely come across itinerant presentations by street artists while you walk around Pituba. During the days I was there, the ones that impressed me the most were the capoeira circles of the natives where I could witness fierce disputes and the sound of @technobalde.

LMTM🦊 Tip: Did you enjoy the performance? Remember to leave a tip in appreciation of the entertainment and support for the artists.

29 – Drinks at Coco Pimenta

Coco Pimenta is ideal for drink lovers with several cocktails options, including authorial ones. In addition, it has successful foods such as the taioba roll or banana chips that make up the dishes.

31 – Events by the beach at Cabana Corais

Sustainable Travel

To go to such a beautiful and natural place as Itacaré, we have to talk about sustainable travel. We, tourists, must be really careful in the places that we are visiting and support positive impact initiatives.

Check out the tips about sustainable tourism in Itacaré:

  • Avoid producing garbage and collect what you find in the middle of the trails: Make conscious choices, and opt for paper packages that decompose more easily or aluminum cans with a high recycling rate in Brazil.
  • Bring home just good memories: Stones and shells contribut to the ecosystem where they are, so don’t take them as a gift from your trip.
  • Support local projects: This is a way to know more about the reality of the destination, support the region’s development and value people who dedicate their life preserving the environment and culture.
  • Do not feed the animals: We can’t get the animals used to humans food, because our food is not appropriated to them.
  • Respect your surroundings and lower the volume: Besides disturbing the people around you, loud music also disturbs the nearby animals.

Among the sustainability initiatives that have stood out in Itacaré and are worth knowing and supporting are:

  • Recicla Itacaré: Project that carries out selective collection actions, helps collectors from the city dump, and offers environmental education in schools;
  • Movimento Mecenas da Vida: Encourages individuals and companies to make carbon offsets;
  • ASTARTUC (Taboquinhense Association for Community Tourism Development): Selling ecological straws made from taboca (a type of bamboo). It costs only R$1.50* a unit and comes packaged in paper. Interested parties can contact Ativa Aventura, which is part of the association.
